At a Glance

Although not documented, her middle name was probably Huske which was her paternal grandmother’s maiden name (Ann Alves Huske). In her paternal grandfather Dr. James Webb’s papers are records of payments he made to Robert Burwell for Anne’s tuition from 1841 through 1845. In her research, Mary Claire Engstrom speculates that during this period Anne lived at her grandparents’ house and attended the Burwell School as a day student. Anne died in April 1892 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, AL [1] [2] [3].

Story

From The Book of Burwell Students: Lives of Educated Women in the Antebellum South [4]:

Anne (or Annie) Huske Webb of Greensboro', Alabama, was the second child of Dr. James Webb Sr.'s eldest son, Dr. Henry Webb and Maria Dickson Webb, whom he married in 1832. Henry Webb first removed to Alabama with the intention of becoming a planter, but returned to Hillsborough and took a course of medical training with his father before removing to Alabama a second time and establishing his medical practice in Gadsden.

The extensive James Webb Papers contain...records of payments to Robert Burwell for Anne Webb's tuition from 1841 to 1845. Presumably, throughout this period she had lived at her grandfather's capacious yellow frame house on E. Queen Street and had attended the Burwell School as a day student.

Anne (or Annie, as she seems always to have been called) thus attended the Burwell School as a regular student from spring 1841 apparently through 1845...

Existing Webb genealogies give scanty information about Anne Huske Webb's life.
