James Webb, Jr., one of nine surviving children, was the son of Dr. James Webb, a Hillsborough doctor, who founded the North Carolina State Medical Society in 1799 and his wife Annie Alves Huske (1785-1852). His father promoted the cause of education for both boys and girls. It was Dr. Webb who encouraged Anna Burwell to open her school in 1837. His daughter Mary (James’ sister) was one of her first students.
