Carrie Waitt Spurgeon, daughter of Burwell student Mary Albertine Jones , purchased the Burwell School in 1895 with her husband Dr. John Sanford Spurgeon, and the property remained in family hands until 1965 when it was sold to the Historic Hillsborough Commision [1].

Story

Mary Albertine Jones  married George Nathaniel Waitt and had two children: George, Nathaniel Waitt, Jr. and Carrie Waitt. Her daughter, Carrie Waitt married Dr. John Sanford Spurgeon, a local Hillsborough dentist. The Spurgeons purchased the Burwell School in 1895, and the property remained in family hands until 1965 when it was sold to the Historic Hillsborough Commision. The garden adjoining the Burwell School is named in honor of Carrie Waitt Spurgeon, the daughter of a former Burwell student.

Carrie Waitt Spurgeon is buried in Hillsborough Town Cemetery along with her parents, grandparents, uncle, and brother [1].
