Story
Dr. John Sanford Spurgeon, a local Hillsborough dentist, married Carrie Waitt, the daughter of Burwell student Mary Albertine Jones . The Spurgeons purchased the Burwell School in 1895, and the property remained in family hands until 1965 when it was sold to the Historic Hillsborough Commision. The garden adjoining the Burwell School is named in honor of Carrie Waitt, the daughter of a former Burwell student [1].
