Mary Albertine Jones' s daughter, Carrie Waitt and her husband John Sanford Spurgeon, purchased the Burwell School in 1895, and the property remained in family hands until 1965 when it was sold to the Historic Hillsborough Commision [1].

Story

Mary Albertine Jones of Hillsborough was the daughter of Richard M. Jones and Carolina Jones. Richard M. Jones served as sheriff of Orange County, from August 23, 1852 to August 26, 1862, and again from August 22, 1864, to July 4 1865. Mary Albertine Jones was the sister of Dr.Clarence D. Jones (1866-1937). She was a young day student at the Burwell School in its closing years.

Mary Albertine Jones married George Nathaniel Waitt and had two children: George, Nathaniel Waitt, Jr. and Carrie Waitt. Her daughter, Carrie Waitt married Dr.John Sanford Spurgeon, a local dentist. The Spurgeons purchased the Burwell School in 1895, and the property remained in family hands until 1965 when it was sold to the Historic Hillsborough Commision. The garden adjoining the Burwell School is named in honor of Carrie Waitt, the daughter of a former Burwell School student.

Mary Albertine Jones is buried in Hillsborough Town Cemetery along with her parents, husband, brother, and two children [1].
