Farquhard [sometimes spelled Farquard] Campbell Smith II was a graduate of UNC and of the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston. He married Burwell student, Sarah Elizabeth Sanders  in 1868.

Story

The parents of Farquard Campbell Smith II were Sarah Slocumb Grady and Farquhard C. Smith, [Sr.], a wealthy planter before the Civil War and large landowner in Cumberland County. His ancestors were among the earliest settlers on the Upper Cape Fear River. Farquhard C. Smith, [Sr.] inherited from his father, Lebanon Plantation where the Civil War battle of Averasboro took place. The house is now a historic site because of its Civil War use as a military hospital.

Farquhard Campbell Smith II Enlisted in Company D, North Carolina 3rd Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate States of America as a private on May 3, 1862.

After Sarah Elizabeth Sanders  and Farquard Campbell Smith 's marriage, they lived with her widowed mother, Sarah Campbell, in Johnston County. The couple eventually moved to Harnett County (formed from Cumberland County, NC in 1855) where the family of Farquhard Campbell Smith II lived. He carried on an extensive medical practice in Harnett and Hoke Counties for many years. Family records give Sarah Elizabeth Sanders  and Farquard Campell Smith children's names as: Ida Ross Smith, Edwin Sanders Smith, Laura Sanders Smith, Douglas Smith, Farquhard [III] Campbell Smith, Jane Robeson Smith, and Bettie Smith who died as an infant in 1881.

The graves of Sarah Elizabeth Sanders  and her husband Farquard Campbell Smith II lie with their infant daughter Bettie Smith in Sardis Presbyterian Cemetery [1] [2] [3]
