In the fall of 1861, Edwin joined Company D, 3rd North Carolina Cavalry of the Confederate Army. He remained with that unit until the fall of 1863. He was promoted to Lieutenant Company A, 24th Regiment, Barringer's Brigade, Hampton's Division, and later was transferred to William Henry Fitzhugh "Rooney" Lee's Division.
Edwin was killed May 16, 1864 at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, VA. After the war his remains were brought home where he was reinterred at the Ransom Sanders Cemetery, Smithfield, Johnston County, NC
