Frances Iredell Jones of Hillsborough was the granddaughter of NC Governor James Iredell of Edenton who served from 1827-1828 [1].

Story

Fanny I. Jones, listed mistakenly in the Burwell School Catalogue of 1848-51 [2] as  "Fanny J. Jones,"  was the daughter of lawyer Col. Cadwallader [III] Jones and Annie Isabella Iredell, daughter of NC Governor James Iredell of Edenton.

The Joneses purchased Burnside on the eastern edge of Hillsborough on May 27, 1838, but Frances Iredell Jones, their first child, was born on February 5, 1837, before Burnside was acquired.

Besides having a most distinguished maternal ancestry, Fanny was also the granddaughter of Col. Cadwallader Jones, [Jr.] and Rebecca Edward Long of West Hill in Hillsborough. Although many Burwell students had notable ancestries, few could have surpassed that of Fanny Iredell Jones.

Fanny attened the Burwell School in the late 1840s or early 1850s. She had an interest in music, for Mrs. Burwell (Anna Robertson Burwell ) mentions in a letter of March 4, 1856, that Dr. Edward Scott bought  "Fanny Jones's piano"  for his sister Billie.

Fanny married George W. Erwin, son of John Erwin and Eliza Margaret Chadwick of Glencairn, on October 14, 1856, at West Hill, her paternal grandparents home [1].
