« return to database listSally Rebecca Jones of Hillsborough married Josiah Collins, IV of Somerset Place in 1859, and took refuge at the Burwell School during the Civil War with her in-laws, the Collins family.
Sally Rebecca Jones, the ninth child of Col. Cadwallader Jones, [Jr.] and Rebecca Edward Long was born March 16, 1833, at the Joneses' family estate, West Hill, west of Hillsborough. Col. Cadwallader Jones, [Jr.] was a wealthy, distinguished man, and his wife, Rebecca Edward Long was a legend in her own time for her queenly bearing and her charm of person and manner. West Hill was renowned for its hospitality and the graciousness of its owners.
Sally Jones attended the Burwell School for a few years in the 1840s, when she was ten or eleven years old, to young to be sent to the fashionable schools in New York, which she would attend later. Sally Jones is not listed in the Burwell School Catalogue of 1848-51 [1], but the Burwells were fond of her and her mother, and there are various mentions of both of them in letters and accounts:
Annabella Norwood wrote her cousin, W.N. Tillinghast on October 9, 1847, that, "Miss Sallie Jones has left school;" and in a letter from 1849, she writes, "I attended a dance on Monday evening at Col. Jones's as Miss Sally is spending her Christmas Holiday at home;" and in another letter dated September 22, 1849, she write, "Miss Sally Jones is back from the Springs...she is a perfectly beautiful girl."
Mrs. Burwell (Anna Robertson Burwell ) wrote on January 19, 1856, to her daughter Frances Armistead Burwell :
...about twelve o'clock Mrs. Jones was announced...I love her so much & 'twas such a day for her to come out so...I came in & welcomed her truly...I enjoyed Mrs. Jone's visit very much. She is certainly one of the loveliest of old ladies.
Sally Jones evidently lived a fairy-tale girlhood at West Hill. On December 13, 1859, she married Josiah Collins, IV of Edenton and Lake Phelps. The Collinses had six children: Mary Riggs Collins, Josiah Collins, V, Cadwallader Jones Collins, Rebecca Allen Collins, Lizzie Jones Collins, and Althea Collins.
Sally Rebecca Jones died on October 29, 1892. She had been a widow for over two and a half years, for Josiah Collins, IV died on February 14, 1890. Sally Rebecca Jones, her husband, and two of her children, Mary Riggs Collins and Lizzie Jones Collins, are buried in St. Matthew's Churchyard [2].
