« return to database listJames Alexander Grice was the brother of Sarah Eliza Grice who attended the Burwell School around 1848.
James and his siblings inherited slaves when their parents died. As was common at the time, the slaves were rented out by the children's guardian. NC Wills and Probate Records show many of these accounts going on for years.
In 1851, Billie Faison (the siblings' grandfather) was taken to courst in Sampson County by William Dunn Moseley of Florida, who was the brother of Billie's wife Susan Moseley. William had become James Alexander Grice's guardian when he had been "removed to Florida". He sued for the slaves who were the propertyof James and also for the rent that was to be collected for renting them out that year.
James Alexander Grice was born on October 1, 1831.
