Ellen was the sixth of eight children of Hannah Beach North (1775-1862) and Elisha North ((1770-1843). Dr. Elisha North founded the first Eye Infirmary in the United States. He was a pioneer in the use of the smallpox vaccine, which he used on his family. Ellen’s older brother Erasmus taught Elocution at Yale University. Her brother William Heberdeen North was a merchant in New York. Her brother Harvey died in Texas, and her brother James died in Canada. Ellen North’s oldest sister Maria Sybil North Mitchell lived in Chapel Hill where her husband Elisha Mitchell, also from New London, Connecticut, was on the faculty of UNC. Ellen North probably was at the home of her sister Maria when she was married in 1834.
