John C. Coit is the father of Burwell School student Martha Day Coit  and the uncle of Burwell Student Elizabeth Coit .

Story

The Rev. J. C. Coit was the son of the merchant and New London town clerk David Gardiner Coit and Betsey Calkins Coit. John Coit moved from Connecticut to South Carolina in October, 1821.. He set up practice as an attorney. In 1834 he became president of the Merchant’s Bank of Cheraw. He was an elder in the Cheraw Presbyterian Church, studied for the ministry, and in 1838 was ordained and installed as the first minister of the Cheraw Presbyterian Church, a position he held until 1859, at which time the church purchased his home and adjoining lots for a manse. John Coit’s health failed in 1857, and he died February 6, 1863; during his illness he was unable to preach. For many years the Rev. Coit gave his whole salary to Foreign and Domestic Missions. According to the Coit family history, Rev. John c. Coit resided temporarily in Milwaukee, Wiconsin; Goldsboro, NC; and Sumpter SC.
