Maria Mitchell (1793-1857) was the eldest of the children of Hannah Beach North and Dr. Elisha North of New London, Connecticut. She was the wife of UNC professor Elisha Mitchell, for whom the highest peak in the North Carolina mountains is named. Her sister Ellen probably was living with her in Chapel Hill when in 1834 a marriage bond was filed for Ellen and John C. Coit in Orange County.
