Story

Emily Cooley's rose-decorated tombstone in the Phillips plot in the Old Town Cemetery reads: Emily Eliza Cooley, Dau. of Charles L. and E.A. Cooley, b. April 26, 1837, d. December 30, 1869, Aged 32 yrs., 8 mos., 4 days. Both Cooley parents are buried in the Old Town Cemetery.

The large Cooley family of at least four daughters and three sons lived a financially precarious life. The family was once evicted from their small house in the southeast quadrant of town for nonpayment of rent. Charles Loveland Cooley was a Methodist lay minister. He also served one term as Hillsborough's mayor, from 1877 - 1878.

Emily Cooley probably attended the Burwell School about 1850. She would have been a day pupil.
