« return to database listEmily Eliza Cooley's large family lived in Hillsborough. Her father, the Rev. Charles Loveland Cooley, had some difficulty supporting the family. Emily Eliza's sister, Mary Cain Cooley , also attended the Burwell School.
Emily Cooley's rose-decorated tombstone in the Phillips plot in the Old Town Cemetery reads: Emily Eliza Cooley, Dau. of Charles L. and E.A. Cooley, b. April 26, 1837, d. December 30, 1869, Aged 32 yrs., 8 mos., 4 days. Both Cooley parents are buried in the Old Town Cemetery.
The large Cooley family of at least four daughters and three sons lived a financially precarious life. The family was once evicted from their small house in the southeast quadrant of town for nonpayment of rent. Charles Loveland Cooley was a Methodist lay minister. He also served one term as Hillsborough's mayor, from 1877 - 1878.
Emily Cooley probably attended the Burwell School about 1850. She would have been a day pupil.
Emily Eliza Cooley was born on April 26, 1837. She died on December 30, 1869, and was buried in Old Town Cemetery in Hillsborough, NC. Emily Eliza Cooley is buried in the D.D. Phillips plot of theOld Town Cemetery. D.D. Phillips, Eliza's brother-in-law, shared his purchased burial plot with members of the Cooley Family [1].
