At a Glance

Catharine  "Kate"  Chapman's parents were Physician Samuel Edward Chapman (1807-1862) and Elizabeth  "Eliza"  Snead (1811-1868) both from New Bern, Craven County, NC. Kate and her sister, Mary Snead Chapman  attended the Burwell School in the late 1840s when their names were printed in the Burwell School Catalogue.

Throughout her life, Kate was devoted to Mary's children. Kate herself never married. Instead she seems to have lived the life of the dedicated spinster aunt [1].

Story

CATHARINE  "KATE"  CHAPMAN (Updated in 2018 by a BSHS Researcher)

Catharine “Kate” Chapman (1834-1890) was the daughter of Elizabeth “Eliza” Snead (1811-9 October 1868) and physician Samuel Edward Chapman (1807-1862). She and her parents were from New Bern, Craven County, NC. Catharine’s younger sister Mary Snead Chapman (1835-27 January 1882) and Catharine attended the Burwell School in the late 1840s. With the exception of attending the Burwell School, Catharine lived in Craven County her entire life.

The following information is noted about her in The Book of Burwell Students by Mary Claire Engstrom. The information comes from Alice Noble who found it in the Primrose family files and provided this information to Engstrom. Referring to Catharine  "Kate"  Chapman it reads in part  "During her later years her condition was distressing. She was devoted to Mary Snead's children and there are many letters showing her devotion...No information has been found about the dates of death of the sisters... Older residents of New Bern remember  "Kate"  and this means she lived to an old age."   "Kate"  remained single.

The researcher found information in Find A Grave that listed Catharine’s death date as 22 July 1890 [1].
