Haynes Waddell was the son of John Burgwin Waddell and Sarah “Sallie” Nash whose parents Francis Nash and Sarah Moore were among the most distinguished families of North Carolina. Francis Nash served first under Governor Tryon and then under Gen. George Washington; he was killed at the battle of Germantown in 1777. The Moore family owned Orton Plantation and were founders of plantations near Brunswick in New Hanover County, and Alfred Moore owned Moorefields in Orange County. Mrs. Engstrom reports that Col.
