Barbara Maria Montgomery, listed as Maria in theBurwell School Catalogue of 1848-51 [2] was the younger sister of Daniel Archibald Montgomery who married Josephine Berry , also a Burwell student. Maria attended the school in the late 1840s and was the ninth of ten children born to U.S. Congressman William Montgomery and his second wife Sara Albright.

Maria's father, William Montgomery died in 1843, her older brother Daniel Archibald Montgomeryl became her sponsor at the Burwell School and is listed in the school's published list of Patrons in the catalogue [1] [3].
