Information recorded at findagrave.com reports that at age 18 Thomas volunteered for the Confederate army on 18 May 1862. He was a private in Company H, 24th North Carolina Infantry, DSA. Additionally:

• He was wounded in action during a skirmish with Union troops at Boon’s Mill, near Jackson, NC, on July 28, 1863 (shot through the jaw).

• His brother, 3rd Lt. Alexander Jones Bumpass, served in the same unit and was killed in action at Petersburg, VA, in 1865, during the closing days of the war.

• Two other brothers, Capt. John K. Bumpass and Orderly Sgt. Robert D. Bumpass, Jr., served with Co F, 5th Texas Partisan Rangers, CSA, Robert drowned while attempting a crossing of the Red River during the war.

Thomas was the son of Robert D. Bumpass and Nancy Marietta Davie Bumpass, who were married circa 1826.
