John Wesley Pearce was one of the wealthiest men in Cumberland County before the Civil War. He was a merchant in association with his Tillinghast cousins, worth $45,000 in the 1860 census. In 1870, he is listed as a grocer with his worth $9,000.

He married Eliza Mildred Lewis on 20 May 1835. Eliza died in 1844. In 1847, he married Laura C. Martine. He died in 1879 and is buried in Cross Creek Cemetery #1 in Cumberland County, NC.
