Cedar Grove Academy, also called Hughes Academy, (1845-1884) was operated first by Samuel Hughes and later by his daughter Annie Savalette Hughes, who had helped Burwell School alumna Emma Jane Scales operate Reidsville Female Academy. The Hughes Academy building is preserved and now has been relocated to property inHillsborough behind the Board of Education Office at East King Street.
