Story

One of ten children, Martha K. Williams, also known as Pattie, was born in Warren County in 1839. Her father, Solomon Williams, was a farmer who owned $2110 in real estate and 35 slaves in 1850. He accumulated a great deal of property between 1850 and 1860, listing the value of his real estate as $30,000 and his personal property as $70,000 in the 1860 census.

Her mother, Martha A. Williams, kept house.

In the 1850 census Martha K. (Pattie) is listed twice, once as a member of her family in Warren County (where she was listed as illiterate) and again as a student in a co-educational school run by William D. Cooke and his wife Lucy in Raleigh, Wake County, NC. It is unclear when she attended the Burwell School.

In 1880 she and six of her siblings, all unmarried, were living in the same household as their mother in Fork, Warren County, NC. In 1900, she was living with her sister-in-law, Kate A. Williams and Kate’s children in Fork. In 1910 she was living with another sister-in-law in Fork. She died in 1912 in Warren County.
