At a Glance

Hannah Hawks was one of four children of John Stephens Hawks, a prominent lawyer of New Bern and Washington. She was the descendant of several prominent members of New Bern society including John Hawks, the architect of Tryon Palace [1].

Story

The information that Hannah attended the Burwell School in 1841 and 1842 is contained in a letter dated 7 November 1841 from Marcus Cicero Stephens formerly of New Bern but at that time of Quincy. He wrote to his granddaughter, Mary Anne Primrose , another Burwell School student:

"When I was at John's [John Stephens Hawks's] in Washington County there was a daughter of his in pantalets that I called Ben to plague her. Ask her if she is the one. I mean John Hawks' daughter now in Hillsboro..."

Hannah was preceded to Hillsborough by two relatives: her paternal aunt Phoebe Rice Hawks and her paternal uncle Francis Lister Hawks. Phoebe moved to Hillsborough in 1822 after her marriage to Walker Anderson. Francis purchased the Ruffin-Roulhac House and settled there briefly with his first wife in 1825. Both uncle and aunt, however, had removed from the area by the time sixteen-year-old Hannah came to the Burwell School.

Hannah died at the age of eighty-three years old [1].
