Story

James served in the Confederate Army. He enlisted 5 March, 1862 in Tallahassee as a Lieutenant. His Civil War record indicates he served in the 2nd Florida Cavalry and in the 5th Florida Infantry. On the 8th of June 1864 the 11th Florida Infantry Regiment was organized and James was assigned to Company I with the rank of Captain. The records show him as “absent” at some time in 1864 (month not legible in original record) and indicate he is in the hospital in Richmond. He died in Richmond at Stuart Hospital April 1865.

James’ father was Richard Alexander Shine (1812-1862) who was born in Sampson County, NC. His mother was Mary Ann Maultsby (1812-1875) from Cumberland County, NC

The surname Torrans provides a connection between the two families. As shown below, Sallie Grice’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Kenan Torrans from Duplin County, NC. James Miller Shine’s paternal grandmother was Agnes Anne Torrans from New Bern, Craven County, NC. To date, a specific relationship within the Torrans family has not been determined.
