Miriam Carson White of Smithfield, NC married John G. Williams in 1853. They have five daughters, all of whom attended the Nash & Kollock School. Miriam was the first female bank president in the US. Upon the death of her husband in 1879 she assumed his position as President of the State National Bank of Raleigh, N.C., a large and reputable family-owned bank established by her husband. After a few years in that office and with the blessing of the governing board, she turned the presidency to her son-in-law Charles E. Cross. In 1888 Raleigh was rocked by scandal when Charles Cross and Miriam's brother Samual C. White (who had been a teller at the bank for 30 years) absconded with the funds of the bank which they had removed from the safe. They escaped to Canada, forcing the bank to collapse immediately, leaving many depositors penniless.
Miriam Carson White was born 1831, in Smithfield. She died 1910.
