Born in NC in 1826, John Pool attended The University of North Carolina where he was a member of the Philanthropic Society. He graduated in 1847. John was married to his first wife, Narcissa D. Sawyer, until her death in 1856. They had two children together, Gaston and Mary Lela. He was an attorney and served in the NC Senate 1856-1858 and 1864-1865. In 1857, John married Mary E. Mebane, they had one son, John. He ran for Governor of NC (Constitutional Union Party) in 1860 against incumbent Gov. John Ellis. He was a U S Senator from North Carolina from 1868-1873. John served as a trustee of UNC in 1864 and 1868. In 1860 he made the UNC Annual Address before the LIterary Societies. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. [1] [2].
