Emma Smith (1911-1989), daughter of Farquhard C. Smith III and Martha Young, married Samuel Simpson Kirkland (1883-1971) of Ayr Mount on November 23, 1949. He was the son of John Umstead Kirkland, Jr. and Fanny Harriet McLaren. Ayr Mount, a Federal-style plantation house located in Hillsborough, Orange County, NC., was built in 1815 and was in the Kirkland family for 170 years. In 1984, a nephew of Emma Smith sold the estate to Richard Jenrette, who restored and furnished it with period antiques, including many original Kirkland family furnishings. Ayr Mount was donated to the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust in 1993 and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Emma Smith is buried on the Ayr Mount Estate.
