Alice was described by grandfather Thomas C Ruffin in a letter to Frances G. Roulhac April 22, 1850: “Little Alice seemed to know I was something to her, and was ready to come to me and laugh for me and be kissed. She is a large healthy baby, and very quiet and good natured, and her parents think her very beautiful…she has the extra charm of a red head.” [1]
