Rev. Gilchrist was a graduate of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ.

He entered the ministry and spent most of his career at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC. He was installed as pastor there in 1841. After his death from pulmonary disease in 1862, an entry in The Presbyterian Historical Almanac for 1862 states: He was a faithful pastor and a kind counselor; his humility, his purity and his exalted piety, won for him the affection and esteem of all which whom he associated.”

Dr. Gilchrist established a Sunday School for “colored children” at which one of his daughters taught.
