Maria Martin Moore's parents were William Moore, Jr (1775-1829) and Amy Martin (1776-1838). Mrs. Engstrom’s work indicates that Mrs. Howerton was “set upon, in a passageway of the hotel [managed by Major Howerton] and struck a heavy blow on the back of her head and neck.” She does not cite a reference for this event, though it may have been reported in the Hillsborough Recorder. Obituaries for Mrs. Howerton were printed in the Carolina Watchman from Salisbury, NC, 14 June, 1864 and in the Hillsborough Recorder 22 June 1864. The text of the obituary in the Hillsborough Recorder refers to the fact that she had “suffered for many years.”22 June 1864 [1]. 14 June 1864 [2].
