On pages 30-34 in The Book of Burwell Students a “revised roster” of Burwell students appears, compiled in 1983. That roster includes Sallie E Faison from Sampson County, NC; however, there is no sketch in the book on Sallie E. Faison.
To date, no evidence has been obtained to establish that a student named Sallie E. Faison attended the Burwell School in Hillsborough.
There are Sarah/Sallie/Sally Faisons from Sampson and Duplin Counties; however, none of them are of the correct age to have been a student at the Burwell School in Hillsborough.
A student named Sallie E. Faison from Duplin County did attend the Charlotte Female Institute when the Burwells ran the school. It is possible that this young woman was mistakenly believed to have attended the Burwell School in Hillsborough.
That student is the subject of this entry into the database of Burwell People. She is a third cousin to Mary Amelia Faison, who did attend the Burwell School, along with several other girls from Sampson/Duplin Counties who were related.
Sallie Eliza Faison was born and raised in Duplin County, NC, the daughter of Dr. Henry William Faison (1823-1885) and Martha Winnifred Hicks (1832-1900). She was the oldest of 9 children. Sallie was too young to attend attend the Burwell School; however, she attended the Charlotte Female Institute when it was run by the Burwells. Her father’s papers are in the Southern Historical Collection, Manuscripts Department, Wilson Library, the University of Noth Carolina at Chapel Hill. Two letters that Sallie wrote to her mother while Sallie and her sister Mollie were students at the Charlotte Female Institute are included in those documents. They have been transcribed and the transcription is in her file at the Burwell School Historic Site, Hillsborough, NC. Of note is that Sallie was quite fond of Mrs. Burwell and her description of Mrs. Burwell is that of a kind, warm woman.
Sallie Eliza Faison was born on March 5, 1851, in Duplin County, NC. She died on April 5, 1939, of pneumonia.
