At a Glance

Most of the Craigs of New Hope Community are buried in one of the two cemeteries at New Hope Presbyterian Church. The first burial in the  "new"  cemetery was ca. 1869. Martha Jane Craig's father, David, is buried in the new cemetery. Of note is the grave in the same cemetery of Haywood Craig Borland (b. 1861 - d. 1945). The following inscription appears there:

Tomb Erected by Gilbert Craig (For Years This Faithful Black Servant of The David Craig Family Each Sunday Tied His Horse To A Nearby Tree While He Attended Services In New Hope Church. His Mounded Brick Tomb Was Erected by Gilbert Craig Near The Tree, And Hollies, Liriope And Iris Planted In The Area Now Make It A Garden Spot). The 1880 US census entry for the David Craig family lists Haywood Borland, male, black, 19 years old, servant, working on farm. At this writing, it is not clear which Gilbert Craig is responsible for erecting the tomb to honor Haywood Craig Borland [1].
