Eliza's epitaph reads "Blessed [sic] Pure In Heart For They Shall See God."
Elizabeth Jane Matilda “Eliza” Faucette of Alamance County is listed as a Burwell School student in the 1848-1851 catalogue . Eliza was born into a prominent family; her father was Chesley Farrar Faucette and her mother was Margaret Hayes Shutt. Her father was previously married to Margaret Hutchinson, but there were no children from that marriage. Chesley Farrar Faucette was a wealthy, slave-holding merchant who served in the North Carolina State Legislature and ran for the US House of Representatives. Eliza was the fourth of thirteen children of Chesley Faucette and Margaret “Peggy” Hayes Shutt.
On January 7, 1858, Eliza married Edwin W. Beale, as reported in the January 13, 1858 issue of The The Hillsborough Recorder [1].
Edwin was the son of John Spratley Beale and Jane Williams. He was born in Southampton County, Virginia. Edwin entered the Christian ministry and he is one of the ministers whose career is documented in the book, The Lives of Christian Ministers by P. J. Kernodle, 1909 [2], by P. J. Kernodle, published in 1909 . According to that book, Edwin was a student at the Graham Institute in Graham, NC in 1853. In 1858 he married Eliza Faucette and after he married Eliza he continued to be involved in the ministry in both North Carolina and Virginia.
In the United States Census of 1860 [3], the Beales and their children are shown living in Alamance County, NC with the Eliza’s parents. In the United States Census of 1870 [4], they are still living in Alamance County, at this time in the Faucette Township near McCray. In 1873, Edwin transferred to the church’s Eastern Virginia Conference where he took pastoral charge of several churches in the Suffolk area in what was then Nansemond County. In the United States Census of 1880 [5] US Census the Beale family is found living in Nansemond County, Virginia. Edwin died in 1881 and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, Suffolk County, VA. Eliza died in 1905 and is buried with him at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Elizabeth was called Eliza.
